디지털 역사학 적용 사례 feat. 세계 10위 대학의 디지털 역사학

25년 1학기 과제를 위해 조사한 거였는데,

다른 분들께도 도움 되시리라 생각하여 이 내용을 다룹니다.

[서론 : 보고서 취지]

보고서 주제 목록을 처음 읽자마자 ‘그래서 현재 이런 기술이 역사학에 어떻게 적용되고 있지?’라는 호기심이 생겼다. 아쉽게도 최근 논문 대부분은 앞으로의 추이에 대한 서술 위주로 작성되어 있었고1),  현시점 ‘역사학에서의 기술 적용’ 측면에서는 부족했다. 그렇기에 이 보고서는 주로 <역사 연구를 위한 디지털 기술>을 인공지능(AI)과 머신러닝으로 한정하여  현시점 ‘역사학에서의 기술 적용’ 현황을 살펴보게 되었고2), 보고서의 주요 조건 두 가지를 가미하여 본론과 결론을 작성하였다.

2) 이 보고서에는 각주 1)의 사례처럼 타 기술에 대한 설명 또한 등장한다. 아직 디지털 역사학이라는 분야가 확립되지 않았고, 그렇기에 현실에서는 세부 분야 또한 세밀하게 접근되지 않고 있다.

인터뷰에 다음의 문장이 있는데, “Convenient as the comparisons may be, it’s more complicated, said Cathryn Carson, a UC Berkeley historian of science who has studied the development of nuclear energy and the regulatory policies that followed I was trained as an historian of physics and the nuclear era.”

 

앞서 본 냉전 시기에 대한 AI 접근처럼 이 기사 속 핵 발전 역사는 현재까지 이어지는 주제이다.

그렇기에 미래 예측 측면에서 AI가 활용될 수 있다.

종합>

세계대학랭킹 10위권 대학이라고 해서 인공지능과 머신러닝을 활용한 디지털 역사학 수업을 적극적으로 도입하지는 않았고, 워크숍 혹은 학제간 연구로 디지털 역사학 연구가 진행되고 있다. 또한 디지털 역사학 관련 기술 센터보다는 역사학을 포함한 디지털 인문학 센터가 운영되며, 이 점은 한국도 비슷하다.

(예> 카이스트 디지털 인문사회과학부, 한국디지털인문학협의회 한국역사연구회 디지털역사학연구반)

이렇게 된 이유에는 크게 세 가지가 있다고 추측해 볼 수 있다.

첫째, 세계대학랭킹이 높은 곳일수록 급진적으로 변화할 필요가 없다. 학부 모집도 쉬울뿐더러, 상대적으로 학생들 취업도 쉬울 것이기에 점진적으로 변화해 나갈 것이다.

둘째, 사학자들의 기술에 대한 이해가 부족할 수도 있다. 그렇기에 그동안 역사 전문가가 직접 AI 기술을 적용하여 활용하기보다는 학제간 연구(예> ITHACA)로 연구 과제가 진행되었으리라 생각한다.

셋째, 역사학 대신 (역사학을 포함하는) 인문학 기반 AI 기술 적용이 있었던 이유는 세분화보다 통합적 접근이 더 현실적이었기 때문이리라 생각한다. 실제 한국에서도 앞서 말한 카이스트뿐만 아니라 중앙대에서도 HK+인공지능인문학 같은 사업이 존재하며, 성균관대 또한 디지털 역사학 연구 단체는 있으나 실제 학과 등에서 바로 적용되는 분야는 역사학보다는 인문학이다. (예> 학사과정연계전공 - 미래인문학)

아마 AI 기술만 놓고 생각했을 때, 인문학을 총체적으로 접근한 다음 그 접근 성과를 이후 세분화하는 게 비용 측면에서 합리적이었으리라 생각한다.
